Terrible Oasis knowledge, one woman's love of trees and fiery clashes: Six things we learned at the Manchester Evening News' by-election hustings

The hustings for the Manchester Evening News’ Gorton and Denton by-election were lively, with candidates from five parties clashing over various hot topics, including women’s safety and immigration. Notably, the absence of Oasis knowledge was shocking, given the Gallaghers’ roots in the area. Labour’s Angeliki Stogia and Reform UK’s Matt Goodwin had a heated exchange regarding safety and security concerns linked to his rhetoric. Liberal Democrat Jackie Pearcey showcased her local credentials with anecdotes about tree planting. There was little in the way of new policies, except for Conservative Charlotte Cadden’s promise for a new high school in Denton. All candidates supported the idea of tram trains to the station, highlighting the need to collaborate with Mayor Andy Burnham on local improvements.
