King's New Year Honours list 2026: The incredible people from Greater Manchester recognised

This year’s King’s New Year Honours list celebrates some fantastic community heroes from Greater Manchester alongside the usual celebrities. Notable recipients include Dr Nasser Kurdy, an imam from Altrincham awarded an MBE for his interfaith work after surviving a hate crime. Firefighter Nigel Travis from Salford, who co-founded a boxing club to engage local youth, is also honoured with an MBE. David and Suzan Tomlinson from Wythenshawe received a BEM for their charity, Acting on Impulse, which supports homeless individuals interested in acting. The Reverend David Ireland earned a BEM for transforming Francis House Children’s Hospice in Oldham. Manchester council leader Bev Craig is recognised with an OBE for her public service, while NHS leaders like Kathy Cowell and Jackie Hanson have also been awarded for their contributions. Other standout awards include Detective Chief Superintendent Jonathan Miles Chadwick, honoured with a King’s Police Medal for his work in disaster victim identification.
