How Everest mission ended in tragedy and triumph
Fifty years ago, Dougal Haston and Doug Scott became the first Brits to summit Everest, tackling the notoriously tough south-west face. This route is known for its length and harsh winds, making it a serious challenge for climbers who face hypoxia due to the thin air. While fellow climber Martin had to retreat, Peter and Pertemba successfully reached the top. Today, Martin, who once doubled for Clint Eastwood in “The Eiger Sanction,” stays active by visiting a climbing wall in Stockport twice a week.
