Crowds of revellers queue for buses home after Manchester sees in the new year

After the New Year celebrations in Manchester city centre, long queues formed as thousands awaited transport home. The highlight of the festivities was a free fireworks display at Central Library, with additional events in St Peter’s and Albert Squares. Although Metrolink services ran until 1am, bus fares followed a Saturday schedule, creating a surge in demand. Our snapshots capture the bustling crowd waiting for the 192 bus to Hazel Grove amidst the festivities, marking the first time the official New Year’s events spanned these historic squares. With around 20,000 people allowed into St Peter’s Square, the event focused on being family-friendly and alcohol free.
